Spatial correlations of elementary relaxation events in glass-forming liquids.

چکیده
The dynamical facilitation scenario, by which localized relaxation events promote nearby relaxation events in an avalanche process, has been suggested as the key mechanism connecting the microscopic and the macroscopic dynamics of structural glasses. Here we investigate the statistical features of this process via numerical simulations of a model structural glass. First we show that the relaxation dynamics of the system occurs through particle jumps that are irreversible, and that cannot be decomposed in smaller irreversible events. Then we show that each jump does actually trigger an avalanche. The characteristics of this avalanche change upon cooling, suggesting that the relaxation dynamics crossovers from a noise dominated regime, where jumps do not trigger other relaxation events, to a regime dominated by the facilitation process, where a jump triggers more relaxation events.

Spatial correlations in glass-forming liquids across the mode-coupling crossover
We discuss a novel approach, the point-to-set correlation functions, that allows to determine relevant static and dynamic length scales in glass-forming liquids. We find that static length scales increase monotonically when the temperature is lowered, whereas the measured dynamic length scale shows a maximum around the critical temperature of mode-coupling theory. We show that a similar non-mon...
متن کاملTesting "microscopic" theories of glass-forming liquids.
We assess the validity of "microscopic" approaches of glass-forming liquids based on the sole knowledge of the static pair density correlations. To do so, we apply them to a benchmark provided by two liquid models that share very similar static pair density correlation functions while displaying distinct temperature evolutions of their relaxation times. We find that the approaches are unsuccess...
متن کاملAn Overview on Short and Long Time Relaxations in Glass-forming Supercooled Liquids
Density fluctuations in supercooled liquids near the glass transition relax in multiple steps. The short time relaxation is known as β-relaxation and the final long time relaxation is called α-relaxation. It is believed that the long time α-relaxation is a cooperative phenomena associated with a growing length scales, whereas the short-time β-relaxation is often attributed to spatially local pr...
متن کاملShort-ranged attractions in jammed liquids: how cooling can melt a glass.
We demonstrate that an extended picture of kinetic constraints in glass-forming liquids is sufficient to explain dynamic anomalies observed in dense suspensions of strongly attracting colloidal particles. We augment a simple model of heterogeneous relaxation with static attractions between facilitating excitations, in a way that mimics the structural effect of short-ranged interparticle attract...
متن کاملSimilarities and Differences between the Glass Forming Mechanism in Polymers and Metallic Liquids
Survey of categorization of glass forming mechanisms in liquids based on the known principles reported in the literature is given. The metallic glass-forming liquids can be divided into two types – strong (with high glass forming ability) and fragile (with low glass forming ability). While the bulk amorphous alloys formed from strong liquids do not exhibit sensitivity to low temperature relaxat...
